Destiny of Dorado
MEXICO CITY
Mexico’s legislature spent portions of 2019 and 2020 considering a plan to change its Federal Fisheries Law to require Dorado (Mahi Mahi) commercial catches. A federal proposal being debated in Mexico City would strip Dorado from the list of fish reserved solely for sport fishing.
Now, Mexico’s “General Law on Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture” restricts Dorado catches to leisure trips. Nonetheless, the imminent opening of the Dorado fishery to commercial interests highlights recreational fishery desires in Baja California Sur.
In January and February, sources in Cabo San Lucas and La Paz reached out to some friends, to express their concern about the draft amendment that had been circulating in Mexico City, which is the Mexican capital.
Article 68 of the General Law on Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture states: ‘Fish known as Marlin, Sailfish, Swordfish, Shad or Chiro, Rooster and Goldfish, in all their biological varieties, are reserved exclusively for sport-recreational fishing, within a range of fifty nautical miles, counted from the baseline from which the territorial sea is measured.’
Sources have reached out to Mexico’s sources to assess the proposal’s most current status. Nonetheless, a recent posting on digital media by a sportfishing group suggested that the push to amend Dorado’s General Law on Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture to allow commercial fishing may have been halted, at least for now.
“This species (Dorado) is reserved for sport fishing activity which is dependent on by millions of families nationwide,” said an official statement on the Facebook page of the Asociacion Estatal de Pesca Deportiva de Nayarit AC. “We report that the first step has already been taken, the federal deputy Claudia Yáñez Centeno responsible for the Committee on Fisheries … has halted … the amendment to Article 68 of the General Law on Fisheries and Aquaculture.
“The Nayarit State Sports Fisheries Association applauds the decision taken by the lawmakers,” the Facebook post continued.
